Many have probably heard about the Paleo diet, and probably see it as a fad. However, if you look at the timeline, this is a fad that has sustained the modern human race for thousands of years. There is actual evidence (fossils) that have been analyzed and demonstrate that humans have thrived on a hunter-gatherer based diet. If you look at the general public currently, we are anything but thriving. Most are overweight, with diseases ranging from heart disease(#1 killer in the US) high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, blown out knees, ankles, hips, and backs with the excess weight being carried all the time. Not good. Over 600,000 people die every year because of heart disease in the U.S. alone. That is insane. There are kids that are 10 years old with type-2 (adult onset) diabetes. This is all a result of misinformation, poor choices, and lack of physical activity.
The Paleo diet focuses on eating natural foods that would be available before agriculture and science labs started mass producing food. There is less focus on quantity and more focus on high quality lean meats, vegetables, fruit, nuts/seeds, and healthy fats. No grains, dairy, legumes, starch, or processed sugar. When you focus on high-quality and nutrient dense foods, the quantity becomes less of an issue. Its when people tell me they only ordered 2 servings of fries to carb up for the workout that I start to stare in disbelief of what I just heard.
Ive literally been able to tell if a person had fast food the day before a workout. You can smell the oil and muck lingering around them like they left some fries and half a burger in their pocket.
Ive had plenty of clients, students, friends, and family members all try Paleo and guess what? Boom, 5lbs. gone in a week, 8lbs. gone in 2 weeks, and in a couple of extreme cases 44 lbs. gone in 3 months and 86 lbs. gone in 5 months. Why does this happen? Pretty simple actually. If you eat nutrient dense food that nourishes your body and lets it run on the fuel it was designed to, then things fall into place. Initially, people cut out a ton of crap, including copious amounts of carbs/ sugars which instantly cuts water weight and body fat. Then they include protein and vegetables in more meals, equating to sustained energy and proper cellular function. Include some physical activity, plenty of water and adequate rest and thats it. Theres no secret pill or powder that will do this for you.
