Meet Rachel H. She's part of Minnesota Top Team's youth boxing program and she's got some pretty cool things to say about why she boxes:
"I began boxing at Minnesota Top Team because I have always had an interest in boxing. I know that boxing workouts are intense and I knew that’s what I needed to get me going. I’m not very good at any other sports but I have always had an interest in boxing, so I decided to try it. I chose MN Top Team because out of the few options I had, their gym sounded the best. When I first started, I was really intimidated by all of the other people in the class because they all had so many more skills than I did. Once I started the youth boxing classes, I really enjoyed them.
The coaches are amazing and they always motivate in a positive way. They never yell at you when you do something wrong, they just help you do it right. The other students can be really supportive as well. We do a lot of partner activities so they can be very helpful. Once I had been taking the boxing classes for a while, my confidence really started to grow. I began to really get the skills down and I was able to do a lot more things in class.
My friends all think it’s really cool that I box. A lot of them will always joke around and say that they don’t ever want to make me mad, but they know that I’m doing boxing training for the right reasons. Boxing is a really good stress management technique for me. Whenever I go to boxing, I forget about everything else and just focus on what I have to do there. Someday, I would like to participate in a real boxing match, but I still need to train a lot more before I can get to that point. It’s also a lot harder being a female boxer because a lot less girls fight then guys.
Boxing is one of those sports that you have to be in for yourself. You only have to focus on you because you aren’t a part of a whole team. Boxing takes a lot of focus and dedication but in my opinion, it is definitely worth it."
